The Ag. Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea has scheduled a meeting with non-health actors today February 3, 2025 to address the cholera outbreak in the central region.
He believes that extending the collaborative approach beyond the health sector is essential to effectively combat the spread of the disease.
Professor Akoriyea is expected to engage the regional coordinating council, local government, water and sanitation and traditional religious leaders to help contain the outbreak in the region.
According to GHS, this will be his first out of office trip after taking office just a few days ago, and it demonstrates his resolve to find solutions to some of the pressing public health issues the country is battling with presently.
In the Central Region, 180 of 1,929 suspected cholera cases have been confirmed, with 28 receiving treatment. The outbreak has spread to 20 of the 22 districts, with Awutu Senya recording the highest number of suspected cases.
Nationally, the cholera outbreak has affected 359 cases across 46 districts, and has claimed 37 lives as of December 26, 2024.
