The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) claims the government’s decision to lower petroleum products by 15 pesewas from today, April 1, 2022, will determine how much the union would raise transportation prices.
Fuel prices in Ghana have been reduced by 15 pesewas per litre as of today. This price cut will last for three months.
Last Thursday, March 24, 2022, the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, announced measures put in place by the government to cushion Ghanaians from present economic shocks.
Abass Imoro, the GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, indicated during a press conference that the union will consider a fresh percentage increase.
“We have to look at how much is going to be reduced from the fuel to inform us on how much we are going to come up with.”
But he stressed that “definitely, we are going to come out with an upward adjustment in lorry fares.”
The GPRTU has attempted to engage the government in a discussion on a plan to raise transportation fares by 20%.
In February, when fuel costs averaged GH6.4 per litre, transportation charges were increased by 15%.
After breaking the GHS 8 per litre milestone in the first week of March 2022, a litre of fuel currently costs GH10.
