The Director for the institute of oil and Gas at the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Simon Mariwah says Ghana’s increased population has a positive implication for development.
According to the provisional results of the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC), Ghana’s population from 6.7 million persons in 1960, has increased to 30.8 million persons in 2021.
To Prof Mariwah, it is not enough to look at the numbers however the structure, distribution as well as the quality of the population is necessary in population studies.
“On the structure of population we look at the male female ratio, how much of them are children, youth, the working population and the elderly. In terms of the quality of population we looking at the education and health of the people…so if you look at this, it has positive implication for development. The assets of every country is its people and the more you have, all things being equal the better the development that you suppose to get.” He added.
Speaking on the ATLANTIC WAVE, Professor Mariwah indicated that one of the ways to realize the socioeconomic development associated with having an increased population is to manage the quality of that population.
This he said will ensure better progress in development.
