Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, says preparations are in the works to ensure that all Ghanaians with SIM cards are re-registered with the National Identification Card by the middle of this year.
This, he claims, is part of a scheme to clean up the country’s cyberspace.
The Vice President said at the 5th Ghana CEO Summit, which is currently taking place in Accra, that everyone who does not participate in the exercise risks losing their SIM card.
“I expect Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Minister of Communications and Digitalization, to declare the date for SIM card registration shortly. All would have to register their SIM with a National ID number by the end of June or the beginning of July this year.”
“If we don’t do that, we’ll risk the SIM card. Both MoMo purchases would have a real identification as a result of this. For eg, it eliminates fraud that occurs via SIM boxes and MoMo,” he added.
“We’re now digitizing the Births and Death Registry; the digitization is 80 percent complete,” the Vice President said. What we’re putting in effect is a scheme that will assign each kid a special National ID number starting next year, when they’re born within a month of each other.”
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has mentioned that the government is committed to rebuilding a resilient economy through policies and strategies.
According to him, the nation can do this by digitising the government, which will result in increased tax growth and economic expansion.
“We need to transition to a digital economy and it would have a common basis of reality and a single name for all purchases around the board. So, since we took office this year, we’ve been working on integrating the national ID card database with other important datasets.
“We’ve combined it with SSNIT and GRA,” she says. In Ghana, for example, TIN numbers were 750,000 up until 2016. We quickly raised the TIN amount from 750,000 to 15.5 million by making it our national ID number.
