The Ministry of National Security is urging Ghanaians to avoid disclosing their assistance on the SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING Campaign.
This, according to Mrs. Akosua Danquah Ntim Sekyere, Coordinator for the Campaign has become needful due to some concerns of individuals who have reported suspicious issues.
You will recall that Government launched the SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING Campaign about two years ago owing to the instability and attacks within the sub-region like in Burkina Faso, and abductions in Nigeria, among others to ensure citizens stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities within their communities.
However, the coordinator revealed that some citizens have expressed concerns about being victimized after reporting issues of such nature.
she said, “There’s been instances where people have gone to the police to report something and before they knew, the criminals have gotten to know that they were the ones who reported them”.
She emphasized that the police are a professional body however there are bad nuts among them whose activities discredit the police service.
Meanwhile, Akosua Sekyere said contacting senior officers or preferably calling the campaign team on the toll-free line 999 is one safe way of reporting suspicious activities within one’s community.
She, however, advised against prank calls saying “If you have not seen anything, do not call the toll-free line. You only call us when you see something that you suspect could compromise the safety of citizens within that community.”
According to her, the toll-free line safeguards the person’s security as such people should have the confidence to utilize the toll-free line in reporting suspicious activities.
“When you call the toll-free line, we are not interested in your identity or where you are calling from. The only location we are interested in is where you saw the suspicious activity taking place. When you give us that information we have our men deployed all over and we will know who to call to ascertain what you saw”
Akosua Ntim Sekyere spoke to ATLFMNEWS after the SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING campaign team sensitized the congregation at Wesley Methodist Cathedral in Cape Coast on Sunday.
Additionally, she emphasized the need for individuals to avoid having first contact with any material or person in the wake of sighting something suspicious.
To her, the first contact should be the toll-free line as this will help them dissolve any suspicions that hitherto citizens have no expertise to do so.
“Let’s say somebody has left a bag or box somewhere unattended to; you cannot be sure what the content of the bag is and so we encourage that when you see such a thing, you don’t touch it because you don’t know what might be in the bag,” she continued.
