A Ghanaian Medical Research Fellow, Dr. Gershon Sena Sekley has cautioned Ghanaians against mistaking ordinary food allergies with blood group food allergies.
He said people tend to confuse reactions to certain foods as blood group food allergies to mean that their bodies are rejecting that particular food because of their blood group.
However, he said, “this is not always the case.”
Speaking to the media on the importance of knowing one’s blood group and its requirements, Dr. Sekley noted that, what is sometimes considered blood group foods is not necessarily backed by medical research and as such cannot be strictly adhered to.
According to him, there is no medical data they have done that supports this assertion.
“What we realize was that most of it are due to purely allergy; you can be blood group o – you can marry A+, any person goes. Where it matters most is when we are talking about sickle cells and with that, we need to be very careful”.

He explained that proteins for instance react when there is an allergy and individuals react differently to protein.
“they will tell you that when you are o+ you are not suppose to take groundnut but someone with the same blood group will take groundnut and will not react,” he emphasized
He, therefore, cautions against the tendency of missing out on certain important foods while sticking to what is considered to be a blood group food requirement.
