The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced that Ghana will officially begin issuing chip-embedded passports from Monday, April 28, 2025, as part of an extensive digital transformation agenda aimed at enhancing service delivery and passport security.
The rollout follows the initial launch of the upgraded travel document on December 2, 2024. The new passport incorporates advanced biometric technology embedded within a secure microprocessor chip, which stores the bearer’s personal and biometric data.
It also features a combination of latent and visible security markers designed to prevent forgery and identity theft.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, emphasized that the introduction of the chip-embedded passport forms a key component of the government’s broader commitment to public sector reform, digital governance, and citizen-centered service delivery.
“This development represents a significant milestone in Ghana’s passport modernisation journey. The integration of biometric technology and fortified security features will not only align Ghana with international travel standards but will also significantly reduce the incidence of passport fraud,” the Minister stated.
The physical design of the passport also pays homage to Ghana’s cultural identity, incorporating Adinkra symbols such as “Fawohodie” (symbolizing freedom and independence) and “Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu” (representing democracy and cooperation).

The chip-embedded passport is one of several key initiatives being implemented by the Ministry in 2025, including the establishment of 24-hour passport processing services, courier delivery options, electronic tracking systems, and a 30 percent reduction in passport application fees.
Minister Ablakwa reiterated the government’s resolve to eliminate third-party interference in the passport acquisition process, ensuring a more transparent and accessible service for all Ghanaians.
The Ministry has affirmed its readiness to commence the issuance of the new passports nationwide and has assured the public that adequate logistical arrangements are in place to support the transition.
