Ghana has confirmed 79 cases of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) across the country in 2025, with no fatalities reported so far, according to the latest update from the Ghana Health Service.
The cumulative number of suspected cases stands at 531, as public health authorities intensify response efforts nationwide.
Thirty-four new confirmed cases have been recorded since the last update, with the majority of infections reported in the Western (13 cases), Western North (10), and Greater Accra (9) regions.
The Volta Region has also recorded a new case, while the Ashanti Region reported its first confirmed case this year.
The new cases involve individuals ranging in age from 19 days to 58 years. Out of the 79 confirmed cases, 77 are in home isolation, while four are currently on admission, primarily for isolation and monitoring purposes.
A total of 694 contacts have been identified, including 118 new ones. So far, 52 contacts have completed the mandatory 21-day follow-up without developing symptoms. Three contacts have developed into confirmed cases.
Mpox cases have now been confirmed in 28 districts across 10 of the 16 regions.
Eight districts have reported new infections, including Old Tafo, La Dadekotopon, Weija-Gbawe, Prestea Huni Valley, Ellembelle, Wassa Amenfi West, Wassa Amenfi Central, and Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai.
Public health emergency coordination structures have been activated at national, regional, and district levels and surveillance has also been heightened, with webinars held to train over 1,800 healthcare workers on Mpox management.
Testing is ongoing at key laboratories, including the National Public Health & Reference Laboratory, NMIMR, and KCCR. All newly sequenced cases belong to Clade II.
The Ghana Health Service has noted it’s continuous effort to engage the public through education campaigns, community outreach, and collaboration with civil society and health-focused organizations.
Educational materials have been distributed to clinicians to assist with diagnosis and management, while efforts are underway to ensure early detection and containment of the disease.
