Ghana’s national currency — the cedi — turns 60 this year, marking a historic milestone in the country’s economic journey. The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced a series of national events to commemorate the anniversary under the theme: “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”
The official launch of the Cedi@60 celebrations is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, with President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.
According to the central bank, the Cedi@60 anniversary is more than a ceremonial celebration—it is a strategic platform to reflect on Ghana’s monetary sovereignty, economic resilience, and the reforms that have shaped the national currency since its introduction on July 19, 1965.
“For six decades, the cedi has stood as a symbol of Ghana’s independence, identity, and economic evolution. This milestone allows us to celebrate its legacy and engage the public on its future,” a statement from the Bank of Ghana noted. A Symbol of Sovereignty
Since its introduction, the cedi has undergone multiple reforms and redesigns, reflecting the country’s economic journey and the central bank’s efforts to maintain monetary stability. Over the years, it has become an enduring symbol of national pride and economic independence.
BoG says the Cedi@60 commemoration is designed to revive national confidence in the local currency and inspire collective responsibility to protect its integrity for future generations.
