The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized the Ghana Police Service over the arrest of three social media personalities, describing the action as a waste of state resources and an attack on free speech.
In a statement signed by National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, the group condemned the detention of TikTok creators Fante Comedy and AY, as well as social media activist Sir-Obama Pokuase.
The arrests followed a viral video and online comments that police deemed unsuitable, but which the NPP Youth Wing insists were merely opinions without the capacity to incite harm.
“We are shocked that a serious establishment like the Ghana Police Service will waste resources to arrest and detain young citizens who, out of exuberance, made comments deemed unsuitable for the moment,” the statement read. “These Social Media Activists… are entitled to their opinions, however unsavory they may be.”
The Youth Wing accused the police of adopting a partisan posture, claiming that the security agency has tolerated “worse, reckless comments and videos” from activists affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) without consequence.
“Why the intolerance today? Why is the malicious treatment of all persons who identify with the NPP the new ish for the security setup?” the statement questioned, adding, “The Ghana Police Service should not be a wimp for the executive… where is the INTEGRITY you speak of?”
Citing an alleged attack on former Minister of State and Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, Deputy National Organizer Chris Lloyd, and other NPP members during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun on July 11, the Youth Wing accused police of failing to arrest the known perpetrators because of their political affiliation.
“They are walking free men. Yet you arrest harmless youth for just a social media conversation. This is shamelessly biased and absolutely partisan,” the statement added.
The NPP Youth Wing has demanded the unconditional and immediate release of the three detainees, warning that the arrests “fly in the face of our democratic ethos.”
