Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has openly endorsed the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the best candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews, Mr. Blay said Dr. Bawumia remains the most marketable among those likely to seek the party’s leadership after 2024, noting that he wasn’t marketed enough for the 2024 General elections.

“I believe we didn’t market him well enough. Propaganda and agitation clouded people’s judgment, but given time, Ghanaians will appreciate his efforts on the economy and governance, I have not changed my mind about his competence,” Mr. Blay said.”

Touching on internal reforms within the NPP, Mr. Blay dismissed claims that the push for changes was being driven by any particular faction within the party.

He explained that the calls for restructuring are largely from grassroots members and not from a coordinated group.

“We have a constitution. If people think we need reforms, so be it. There’s no hidden agenda here,” he said. “Change is coming because members are demanding it, not because something catastrophic has happened.”

Responding to criticisms about the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, Mr. Blay acknowledged the loss but argued it was not unprecedented.

“This isn’t the first time a party has lost an election. The NDC has lost before, and so have we. It’s politics. You win some; you lose some,” he remarked.
