France’s Nations League Chances Taking a Hit

Croatia put on a solid show against France in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final, leaving Didier Deschamps’ team in a tough spot. The match in Split ended with a 2-0 win for Croatia, thanks to goals from Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic in the first half. Now, France has a big challenge ahead as they gear up for the second leg in Paris on Sunday. France’s Nations League Hopes in Jeopardy.

Missed Penalty and French Struggles Early On

Things could have been worse for France if Croatia had capitalized on an early penalty. Just five minutes in, Ibrahima Konate was called for a handball, giving Croatia a big chance to go ahead.

Andrej Kramaric stepped up but hit a weak shot right down the middle. French goalkeeper Mike Maignan dove to his right but managed to save it with his feet. Kramaric tried to score on the rebound but missed, allowing France to breathe a sigh of relief.

Maignan remained essential, making a great save against a long-range shot from Josko Gvardiol. At the other end, Kylian Mbappe created France’s first real opportunity in the 16th minute, forcing Croatia’s keeper, Dominik Livakovic, to make a save. Later, Mbappe tried another shot from outside the box after a pass from Lucas Digne, but Livakovic was up to the task again. France’s Nations League Hopes in Jeopardy.

Croatia Takes Charge with Two Goals in the First Half

Croatia finally took the lead in the 26th minute. Perisic got to the byline and sent in a great cross to Budimir, who headed it toward the goal. Maignan made the initial save, but the ball took a weird bounce and crossed the line, putting Croatia ahead.

France pushed back and dominated possession toward the end of the first half, but they couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Just before halftime, Croatia struck again. William Saliba blocked a shot from Martin Baturina, but Perisic was right there to score on the rebound, extending Croatia’s lead.

France’s Second-Half Efforts Don’t Pan Out

After halftime, France aimed to turn things around. Mbappe set up Ousmane Dembele, who got past Gvardiol but shot just wide. Mbappe then had a long-range attempt, but Livakovic was still on point.

To shake things up, Deschamps brought on Bradley Barcola and Eduardo Camavinga. Barcola nearly made an impact but couldn’t finish a cross from Matteo Guendouzi. Dembele missed another chance, and Gvardiol made a key tackle to stop him from getting a clean shot.

Livakovic kept impressing, making a fingertip save on a powerful Mbappe strike. As the game wound down, both Michael Olise and Mbappe had late chances, but Croatia held strong for the important first-leg win. France’s Nations League Hopes in Jeopardy.

A Tough Road Ahead for France

With a 2-0 deficit, France has a big hill to climb in the second leg. They’ll need to step up their attack and tighten their defense if they want to overturn Croatia’s lead and keep their Nations League hopes alive.
