Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Ampratwum-Sarpong, has provided an update on the ongoing sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union, Regional Economic Communities, and Regional Mechanisms in Accra.
This meeting follows Ghana’s approval to host the 37th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Addis Ababa earlier this year.
Speaking at a press briefing, Hon. Ampratwum-Sarpong elaborated on the meeting’s focus and schedule: “It may be recalled that the 37th Ordinary Session of the AU, held in February 2024, approved Ghana to host the African Union mid-year meetings in July 2024.”
He added, “Consequently, under the auspices of His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Ghana is scheduled to host the 45th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and six mid-year coordinating meetings at the Accra International Conference Center from July 18th to 21st, 2024.”
Responding to expectations about discussing peace and security in Africa, Hon. Ampratwum-Sarpong clarified, “It is not always the case that these issues will be on the agenda.
Regarding security arrangements, he assured, “Security arrangements are fully in place. We have deployed security personnel, including military, police, and other units, assigned to the various dignitaries attending.”
He further explained, “This particular meeting does not encompass the entire AU at its highest level. While heads of states and governments will be in attendance, it does not represent the entirety of the AU organization coming to Ghana.”
