Dr. George Ben Crentsil, the former Executive Director of the Ghana Standards Authority, has been accused of receiving double pay for six years while in active duty at the organization.
According to a 2020 report from the Department of the Auditor-General, this is the case.
According to the study, Dr. Crentsil earned GH342,068.70 in double salary-related allowances between January 2011 and January 2017.
According to the report, the Authority’s management is to collect the funds from Dr. Crentsil and report back for verification.
“From January 2011 to January 2017, the Authority awarded Dr. George Ben Crentsil, the previous Executive Director, double salary-related allowances of GH342,068.70. We advised Management to take the required measures to recover GH342,068.70 improperly paid to Dr. George Ben Crentsil, the previous Executive Director, and we notified our office for verification,” according to the report.
This isn’t the first time Dr. Crentsil’s name has appeared in an audit report in connection with suspected misconduct.
Dr. George Ben-Crentsil was accused of misappropriating approximately GH1.6 million and receiving over $1 million in bribe payments while at the Ghana Standards Authority in 2018.
He was accused of receiving $1.2 million from Lemet Construction Company, the company to whom he granted a contract to construct a new training school and dormitory facility for the GSA under the previous NDC government.
Another problem
The Ghana Standards Authority’s Board of Directors was also charged in the current Audit Service report of authorising the payment of GH291,570.12 to the Director-General as salary and associated allowances for the period June 2017 to December 2017.
The sum was also levied on the company’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF) “in violation of the Retention of Fund Act, 2007 (Act 735),” according to the report.
The report said that it had previously “advised the Board to seek retroactive permission from the Ministry of Finance to confirm the Director-pay General’s and associated allowances.”
