The Swedru Fire Station has lost one of its fire officers after he successfully saved two individuals from more than a 20ft well in the Gomoa Obuasi of the central region.
The deceased, Assistant Station Officer (ASO), Joseph Baidoo was part of the crew who were dispatched on Saturday, October 2, to Gomoa Obuasi to rescue two people trapped in the well.
The Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DOIII Abdul Wasui Hudu who made this known in an interview with ATLFMNEWS indicated that ASO Joseph Baidoo went to into the more than 20ft well with a rescue line around his waist and was able to rescue the two people out successfully.
“The rescue officer, ASO Joseph Baidoo, very experienced and the well-trained gentleman who has over the years saved so many lives in the same manner. With the past experience, he went inside the well and was able to rescue the two of them successfully”. He said.
However, he failed in his attempt to come out using the charged hose that was lowered to him. All attempts from the rescue team and fire officers also proved futile.
Subsequently, the Winneba Fire Station was dispatched to the scene, and together with other community members, they rescued the officer who was in an unconscious state.
He was however pronounced dead upon arrival at the Swedru Government Hospital. Those rescued were also sent to the same hospital and are currently responding to treatment.
DOIII Abdul Wasui Hudu who could not hide his sadness said: “…unfortunately we have lost one of ours and these are some of the risk that our job poses.”
He added that a delegation from the office of the chief fire officer is on a visit to the family of the deceased and further details will be communicated to the public in due time.
