Mr Abu Sumaila, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Western Regional Director, has advised Ghanaians to temporarily avoid eating salted fish, also known as kako.
This comes after reports that some members of the community had already selected and killed some of the live melon-headed whales washed up on the beaches of Brawire and Ankobra in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region on Sunday, April 4, 2021.
Mr Sumaila told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at the time the Authority’s officers visited the region that the recommendation to stop consuming Kako was important to maintain public health.
“Let’s put an end to Kako intake for the time being. Since some of the dolphins have been sold out and no evidence has been found, the safest recommendation is to stop consuming Kako for at least a month until inquiries and education take place.”

He said the Authority was currently scouring the numerous markets for any signs of certain fish that could have made their way into people’s homes.
He explained, “Our key priority is the markets in Half-Assini, Axim, Dixcove, and all other potential locations.”
