According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), churches functioning in the Volta Region without a permit will be shut down.
Hope Smith Lomotey, the director of EPA in the Volta Region, claimed in an interview with Citi News that the decision by EPA was necessary because several churches in the region had not adhered to the criteria for running a church as required by EPA laws.
Additionally, Mr. Lomotey pointed out that even though some churches have licenses to operate in certain locations, they have not yet renewed them and could be subject to the Agency’s enforcement.

According to him, churches must apply for a permit before establishing their churches.
He continued by saying that the move was also made in response to concerns from locals about excessive noise made by churches in unapproved areas, especially at night.
“Some [Churches] have applied for permits, others have not, so we are regularising those who have not. The challenge we have is that most of these churches, they establish before they apply for regularisation.
“But you are supposed to apply, after the application, we check and see if the place is conducive enough for such a facility.”
