The Director of the Directorate of ICT Services at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr. Mrs. Regina Gyampoh-Vidogah says the empowerment of women in the technological industry is vital in shaping an equitable society.
According to her, equipping women with digital skills in today’s society which relies heavily on technology will ensure that they are not denied access to basic needs mainly provided via the use of modern technologies.
Dr. Mrs. Regina Gyampoh-Vidogah who is also an ICT specialist was speaking at a Student Symposium held in commemoration of the 2023 International Women’s Day Celebration.
The symposium was under the theme “Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality: The Role of Postgraduate Students.”
She said the role of technology will give women access to basic needs such as healthcare, and education, among others.
Addressing the students, she indicated that although there is no magical solution to achieving gender parity in society, digital technology provides a platform to reduce gender gaps because technology makes it possible to engage more people.
“We have to understand that while there is no single agreement for achieving gender equality, digital technology presents an opportunity to narrow gender gaps by enhancing access to healthcare services, identification, financial services, and information” she emphasized.
She said, “Over 90% of jobs worldwide already have a digital component and most jobs will soon require sophisticated technological skills, whether you’re an administrator, whether you’re whatever, you’ll need technological skills.”
To her, if governments equip women with digital skills to prioritize education in IT subjects, it will help girls, women, and even men and boys to thrive in economies where even teamwork has been automated and digital skills are applied.
She said Technology has the power to shape inductive, creative, and dynamic cultures, from which everybody can benefit and contribute to modern society.
The Student’s Symposium was held under the auspices of the Office of the Women’s Commissioner of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), UCC in collaboration with the Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy, and Documentation (CEGRAD), UCC.
In an exclusive interview with ATL FM NEWS after the programme, the GRASAG UCC Women’s Commissioner, Miss Luu Yinpok Darlyn was glad the programme could achieve its objective of appreciating women and projecting women who are excelling in the ICT field.
