A lecturer with the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Mrs. Rebecca Dei-Mensah has stressed the need for a healthy employer-employee relationship in the workplace.
She notes that the overall success of an organization is greatly influenced by the development of a positive relationship between employers and employees.
She also indicates that a healthy relationship between the two parties builds a positive work environment making the workplace more habitable and preventing conflicts.
She said, “Employees are the lifeblood of the organization, without them the organization cannot go on. They are the most important human resource and it’s very important that this relationship is built because once there is a healthy relationship it enhances work-life balance, you are able to retain the most important talents in the organization for a very long time and this reduces cost for the organization.”
Dr. Mrs. Dei- Mensah made this remark during a 2- day mid-year review meeting that the Central Regional Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority hosted at the University of Cape Coast on the theme; sustaining the NHIS to achieve Universal health coverage.
Addressing the Authority’s regional and District managers, representatives from the Ghana health service among others, Dr. Mrs. Dei-Mensah indicated that though building a healthy relationship at the workplace is not an easy endeavor due to individual differences, it should be the goal of every organization in order to increase productivity.
She said, “…..people are different but you should try and learn from one another. You should go by the organizational culture. It is important that people are able to come down, be emotionally intelligent and be emphatic, understand one another, and then at the end of the day I think the organization would be a very good place to be.”
On the issue of strengthening workplace relationships, she admonished that, cliques must not be encouraged and there should be a level of unity.
She adds that open communication, mutual respect, and understanding at the workplace will go long way to help organizations.
