Nana Amoasi VII, head of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), predicts tough times for Ghana’s power supply by 2025, amidst ongoing power problems known as “dumsor.”
In response to Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s remarks on March 25, 2024, Nana Amoasi highlighted financial strains across the power chain during an interview on Citi Breakfast Show.
He drew a comparison between money in the power sector and lubrication in a car, warning that without proper addressing of financial issues, Ghana’s power grid might weaken which will extend dumsor woes.

According to him, Debts with fuel suppliers, generators, and other agencies are contributing to the problem.
“If these financial hurdles aren’t resolved, Ghana could face more power cuts, posing challenges for future governments inheriting this crisis”, he said.
Nana Amoasi further stressed the urgent need to tackle these financial issues to avoid prolonged power cuts and a sector collapse.
Meanwhile, by broadening the investigation beyond the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to incorporate the entire value chain, there’s hope to pinpoint and fix the root issues causing Ghana’s power challenges.
