Tadhg Beirne named in starting lineup for Lions as Andy Farrell selects a record eight Irish players to start Saturday’s British and Irish Lions Test against Australia. It’s a bold move by Farrell, relying heavily on his Irish and Leinster core for this opening clash against the Wallabies, marking the first Lions Test since the 1890s without a single Welsh player in the lineup.

Record Irish Representation
Previously, the highest number of Irish starters in a Lions Test was seven in the 2009 match against South Africa, but Farrell has now raised the bar with eight Irish players starting and three more on the bench, making nearly half of the matchday squad Irish. England and Scotland supply the remaining players, with no Welsh players in the squad this time.
Tadhg Beirne Secures Starting Spot
One of the most significant selections is Munster captain Tadhg Beirne, who looked like he might lose out to England’s Ollie Chessum for the blindside flanker role. However, after a strong performance in last weekend’s win over the AUNZ Invitational XV, the 33-year-old has claimed the number 6 jersey, edging out Chessum to earn a starting place.
Back Row Decisions
Tom Curry has been chosen for the openside flanker role after a tight contest, leaving Josh van der Flier, Jac Morgan, and Henry Pollock disappointed. Ben Earl’s versatility sees him named on the bench, ready to cover the back row, including number 8 Jack Conan.
Front Row and Lock Selections
Tadhg Furlong is back to full fitness and will start his seventh straight Lions Test at tighthead, while Dan Sheehan is confirmed at hooker. Ellis Genge starts at loosehead ahead of Andrew Porter, with Porter and Rónan Kelleher providing cover from the bench. Joe McCarthy will partner captain Maro Itoje in the second row, with Chessum on the bench, while James Ryan and Scott Cummings are not included in the matchday 23.
Backline Shaped for Balance
With Garry Ringrose sidelined due to injury, Farrell has chosen the experienced Scottish centre pairing of Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu, leaving Bundee Aki on the bench. Hugo Keenan will start at full-back, joined by James Lowe and Tommy Freeman on the wings. Jamison Gibson-Park and Finn Russell will guide the backline, and while many expected Owen Farrell to feature on the bench, Andy Farrell has chosen Marcus Smith to provide cover at out-half for the first Test.
