EduSpots, a UK and Ghanaian NGO dedicated to fostering community-driven educational change, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a grand event at its center in Dwira Akyinim near Elmina in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrim in the Central Region.
The highlight of the celebration was the appointment of Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann as the organization’s patron.
Professor Kaufmann, the Dean of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana and renowned Quiz Mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz, expressed her gratitude for the given role.
Noting her long-standing observation of EduSpots, she expressed admiration for its impact and her honor at the prospect of collaborating with the organization’s leadership and learning communities.
“I’m really excited about this because of the good work that EduSports has been doing over the years. As a patron, I am the ambassador, I am the champion of EduSports. So what I intend to do is to showcase what EduSports has been doing over the 10 years,” she said.
To her, education should not be theoretical only showing as certificate, but as a catylst for change in communities.
Miss Catherine Davison, CEO and Founder of EduSpots, noted that EduSpots aims to improve educational outcomes through play-based methods, community connection, and teamwork.
She added that a key challenge is motivating individuals to believe they can drive change.
“We believe in EduSpots that everybody has some dream for their community but I think it takes some people a while to really believe that they can be that dream for their community and in EduSpots we have some incredible stories.”
Gifty Abudu, a Catalyst at the Akumadan Spot, shared her experiences from her four years with EduSpots.
She explained that education at Akumadan has been problematic however, her collaboration with EduSports “has impacted positively on learners at Akumadan spot.
“Having all the resources needed for education and having the space very conducive for learning. Our learners are now excelling so much in our network. And looking up to our 10 years journey. It has been very wonderful having this network in our midst.”
Since its inception in 2015, EduSpots has developed a dynamic network of over 400 local change makers, known as Catalysts, who have established 50 education hubs, or “Spots,” across 12 regions in Ghana and Kenya.
These community-led hubs focus on early year’s education, digital literacy, gender equity, and STEM and sustainability education.
