Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana’s Minister of Education, has underscored the importance of integrating environmental protection into the curriculum of the Ghana Educational Service.
He emphasized that it is crucial for students to grasp the importance of environmental conservation and the impacts of environmental degradation from an early age.
Speaking at the National Stakeholder Dialogue on Sustainability Reporting, organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana in Accra, Dr. Adutwum stressed the need to incorporate environmental sustainability topics into accounting and STEM programs at higher educational institutions.
He argued that this integration will better equip students to contribute positively to societal and environmental well-being.
Dr. Adutwum stated, “Initially, they are looking at the impact of the environment and how it also affects our work. In our education system, we have taken a look at our curriculum at the university and high school levels, particularly in accounting. It’s not just about accounting; students must also learn about the environment and how to report on environmental issues as accountants.”
He added, “We have high school students who might go through the chartering process without this critical knowledge. So, we are partnering to enhance our education system.
”Accountants with STEM education and a focus on environmental sustainability reporting will find it second nature, as they will be well-versed in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This will enable them to excel as accountants and contribute more effectively to sustainability.”
