Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana’s Minister for Education, has responded to concerns about untrained teachers in pre-kindergarten settings, which fall under the Kindergarten Curriculum aimed at fostering literacy, creativity, and responsible citizenship.
In an interview with GBC, Dr. Adutwum highlighted the challenge of regulating pre-kindergarten education, noting that many such institutions are overseen by the Ministry of Gender, Child Protection, and Social Welfare, rather than the Ministry of Education.
Dr. Adutwum explained that to address this, there will be increased collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social Welfare.
“While the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NASIA) generally regulates private sector schools, pre-kindergarten institutions fall under the Department of Social Welfare. They have the authority to regulate in this area.”
He added, “What is critical is the new policy that promotes collaboration between the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Social Welfare. This partnership will facilitate the transfer of educational expertise to ensure that even if Social Welfare’s focus isn’t primarily education, they will still have the necessary skills and guidance to regulate pre-kindergarten settings effectively.”
This approach he says aims to protect children and prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.
