Leaders of ECOWAS have frozen financial assets and imposed travel bans on Guinea coup leaders and their families in accordance with extant ECOWAS Protocols.
They have therefore called on the Africa Union, the UN, and their international partners to help enforce the travel bans and financial sanctions against the junta and their families.
The decision is to step up pressure on the military junta to restore the constitutional rule.
This was contained in an ECOWAS communique after an extraordinary summit in Accra on Wednesday, September 16, 2021 to review political developments in the Republic of Guinea.
The leaders also directed the junta to ensure the conducting of presidential and legislative elections within six months and insists that no member of the junta will not be allowed to contest in the presidential elections.
They also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of President Alpha Conde and reminded members of the National Committee for Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) that they are “individually and collectively responsible for the physical safety of President Alpha Conde”.
The ECOWAS leaders however expressed their willingness to support the country through the transitional process and stated that until there is restoration of constitutional order, Guinea is suspended from all ECOWAS governing bodies.
The military united headed by Col Mamady Col Mamady Doumbouya seized power in Guinea almost two weeks ago and accused the government of mismanagement and corruption.
