Edward Bawa, a former Head of Communications at the Energy Ministry, has blamed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the country’s existing energy problems.
On Eyewitness News, Mr. Bawa said that the ECG, under the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), failed to take constructive measures that would have rescued the sector from its current condition.
His worries come in the midst of sporadic power outages, which have fuelled fears that the country would revert to the days of unreliable power supply, dubbed “dumsor” by locals.
GRIDCo, Ghana’s power transmission company, has said in various forums that the difficulties are technological and that the country will not encounter “dumsor.”
The Bongo legislator disagreed, claiming that the difficulties are due to a shortage of resources.
“Let us face this; the [energy] sector is under stress. The sector has a lot of challenges and most of them are as a result of finance. The upgrade [of transmission lines] and other things they are talking about should have been done earlier. The upgrade delayed, not because the funding was not there, but just because of the negligence of the ECG under the leadership of the government, and that has brought these challenges.”
The ECG has released a schedule for scheduled power outages in parts of the Greater Accra Region from May 10 to May 17, 2021, amid fears that Ghana will return to dumsor.
These planned outages, according to the company, are to facilitate the work of various contractors on its various lines.
