According to the Ministry of Energy, it has taken note of claims that it was disconnected from its agency, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), on Tuesday due to allegedly unpaid electrical bills.
The Ministry referred to the news as inaccurate and said that their facility uses prepaid meters.
Kofi Abrefa Afena, the Ministry’s communications specialist, commented on the situation and noted that the Ministry has never been cut off from the power grid.
“The Ministry only had prepaid payment challenges and therefore called the ECG to intervene,” he said.

He continued “The Ministry of Energy as the supervising agency of the ECG will support ECG in recovering all its money accruing from energy sold to consumers. The Ministry will lead by example in paying for its energy consumed”.
Mr. Afena claims that the Ministry is urging everyone to pay for the energy they use so that ECG and NEDCo can continue to offer customers important services.
The Electricity Company of Ghana, meanwhile, has announced that it will start a significant disconnection operation today, Monday, March 20, in an effort to raise money.
To recover all of the money owing to ECG, the exercise is utilising nearly every member of the staff, from senior management to junior personnel.
According to the Managing Director, Mr Samuel Dubik Mahama Esq., the company is owed over GH¢5 billion from the month of September 2022 to February 2023. Most of this debt resides with the SOEs and MDAs.
