The Electoral Commission of Ghana has identified 17 political parties that lack regional and national representation and, as a result, risk having their registrations revoked.
The EC has thus given the 17 political parties until Thursday, October 20, 2022 to explain why their registrations should not be terminated under Act 574 of the Political Parties Act of 2000.
The United Progressive Party (UPP) was founded and is led by Kumasi-based Akwasi Addae, better known as Odike.
Another party on the list is the United Front Party (UFP), which was founded by Akwasi Addai Odike and Nana Agyenim Boateng, better known as Gyataba, but after differences, Odike left or was forced to leave to form the UPP.

The Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) is also on the list, created by Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah and several other National Democratic Congress (NDC) members who were dissatisfied with various developments in the NDC and left to form the DFP after the party’s 2005 national executive elections.
The National Reform Party (NRP), founded in 2000 by Goosie Tanoh and other NDC defectors, is also on the list.
The Reform Patriotic Democrats, led by Kofi Akpaloo, who has since moved on to establish a new party, the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), are also on the list.
The Electoral Commission conducted a national inspection of all registered political parties in Ghana.
This exercise took place between May 16, 2022 and June 9, 2022.
Following the statewide examination, the EC discovered that the 17 under-listed Political Parties do not have offices at the National and Regional levels, as required by Section 15 (1) (Act 574), according to a notification published in the Daily Graphic.
“The Commission intends to invoke Section 15 (3) (c) of the Political Parties Act of 2000, Act 574, which mandates it to cancel the registration of Political Parties which do not have offices at the National and Regional levels.”
