The Electoral Commission of Ghana has set Tuesday, 27th June 2023 to hold a parliamentary by-election in the Assin North Constituency in the Central Region.
According to the commission, this decision for by-election follows an earlier ruling of the Supreme Court to the effect that the election of Mr. James Gyakye Quayson as a member of parliament for the Assin North Constituency is unconstitutional, null and void, and of no effect.
This pronouncement of the Supreme Court translates that the seat of the constituency is vacant.
The constitution in accordance with Article 112(5) of the constitution, as amended, enjoins the Electoral Commission to hold a By-Election in the said Constituency.
The EC in a release indicated that nomination forms will be made available on the commission’s website from Thursday, June 1 for prospective candidates to download.
Owing to this, the Assin North District Office of the Commission will begin receiving nominations from Monday 12th June 2023 to Wednesday 14th June. 2023.
It is worth noting that the EC has set between 9:00 am-12:00 pm and 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm daily to receive the nominations on the said date.
The Commission, however, pegs the filing fee for the election at ten thousand Ghana Cedis (GHȼ10,000) per candidate and also urged the public to be guided accordingly.
