The Electoral Commission (EC) says it is satisfied with the nationwide turnout of events on the first day of the compilation of the news voters’ register.
According to the Commission, reports that reached it indicated a positive turnout although it has noted some “few teething issues with the process”.
A statement issued and signed by the Acting Director of the Commission, Mrs. Sylvia Annoh said “The Commission is aware that some Centres recorded high numbers leading to overcrowding. We are taking steps to work with Security Agencies to address possible overcrowding at our Registration Centres”.

The Commission has recruited and trained more than 44,000 registration officers for the exercise as well as some technicians numbering over 5,000 to be deployed nationwide. These technicians, the Commission explains will be required to immediately fix challenges that may arise with the use of the 8,000 registration kits into the field.
The statement is also urging the public to disregard a photograph that was being circulated on social media, purported to be a scene of a registration Centre.
The photograph shows a large crowd gathered together in an area without indicating the “usual Registration Centre set up that characterizes all EC’s Registration Centre”.
“Our attention has also been drawn to an audio circulating on social media to the effect that Ghanaians who guarantee for up to ten (10) people will be disenfranchised. This is not true”, it added.
The Electoral Commission (EC) was given the green light by the Supreme Court to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections after several objections by some groups and individuals.
The exercise which started on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, will end on August 6, 2020. It is being organized using the clusters system. A cluster will consist of five registration centres. The entire registration will also be undertaken in five phases; however, a phase will last for six days. A registration team is expected to spend six days at each of the five centres in a cluster. In all, 16 million eligible Ghanaians are expected to be registered in 33,367 districts in the 16 regions of Ghana.
