Today, Tuesday, May 7, marks the commencement of the limited voter registration exercise for first-time voters and individuals seeking to obtain a voter card.
This 21-day exercise is scheduled to run until May 27, 2024, across the nation.
In a press briefing, Madam Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, outlined that this exercise’s primary objective is to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters nationwide.
She said the registration will be conducted daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the Commission’s target set at 623,000 registrations.
In anticipation of potential power outages, the commission has taken proactive measures.
Madam Jean Mensa emphasized that EC has effectively distributed all our materials to the regions and districts adding that ‘we are confident that there will be no short supply.’
“Additionally, our biometric voter registration kits as well as spare kits to serve as backups have been distributed to the regions and districts.,” she continued.
According to the EC chairperson, all district offices have secured generators to ensure uninterrupted voter registration services. In the event of power cuts, these generators will activate, allowing the registration process to continue seamlessly.
Touting the achievements of the Commission, she said the commission has successfully reduced the cost per head in elections from $13 in 2016 to $7 in 2020, leading to savings of $19 million for the country.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission emphasized the commission’s dedication to enhancing efficiency and transparency over recent years.
“We have adopted an open competitive bidding process as the method of our procurement. (0:08) As such, with approximately 95 per cent of our procurement advertised in the local newspapers, (0:14) we are able to obtain value for money for our services and for materials. (0:20) It has equally injected competition into our procurement and drastically reduced the prices (0:26) at which we procure our materials. It is not a wonder that we managed to lower the cost of our election…,” she said.
