The Ministry of Youth and Sports has said that as part of the phase one of easing restrictions, athletics and relay training can be undertaken while observing the appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols.
The minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Isaac Asiamah was speaking at a ministerial press briefing on guidelines for sporting activities on the phase one of eased restrictions.
President Akufo Addo mentioned in his recent address to the nation that individual non-contact sports could go on with the observance of appropriate social distancing protocol.

Mr. Asiamah explained that although training under this category could take place, no events and competitions shall be taken within this period. This, he indicated is to ensure that mass gatherings are discouraged. Events like relays and athletics are allowed. There will be no events, no competitions, with no supporters around”, he said.
“Restrictions on activities such as athletics, baseball, chess, cricket, cycling, sports, gym, polo, golf, individual non-contact para-sport have been lifted with immediate effect,” he said.
Keep fit club will be allowed to operate but not with persons exceeding a hundred. Other activities such as swimming, snooker, scrabble, shooting, tennis, weight lifting, relay, table tennis have also been allowed.
He however added that “in view of the nature of the covid-19 Team sports cannot be feasible.”
The Sports Minister said the easing on the restriction was necessary in order to help athletes develop the necessary fitness in positioning themselves for competitions at the earliest opportunities when it is safe to do so.
There are still restrictions on arm-wrestling, basketball, beach soccer beach volleyball, boxing, fencing, football, gido, netball, rugby, squash, volleyball and traditional wrestling.
