The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority, DVLA recorded one of its highest vehicle registrations in the early days of January 2024 after migrating onto an exclusive online vehicle registration platform.
According to officials of DVLA, about 8000 vehicles have been registered since the year began.
The establishment of about 13 additional vehicle registration centres across the country and the involvement of private testing stations helped to ease congestion associated with vehicle registration.
This exclusive online vehicle registration system was piloted in 2017 to augment the registration process.
According to Deputy Director of Vehicle Inspection and Registration, Mr. Eric Bentil Addison, DVLA has registered about 14,000 vehicles since September 2023.
He said the long winding queues that characterise early-year registrations have been absent this year. He added that the numbers were minimised despite a spike in the number of vehicles registered as of January, 12.
Mr. Addison emphasized that some common challenges that plagued the manual application process, including identity theft, have been brought under control as the DVLA is partnering with the National Identification Authority to allow for the verification of vehicle owners in real time.
He notes that the Ghana Revenue Authority utilizes the Integrated Customs Management System to profile vehicles upon clearance from the port to address stakeholder concerns about unidentifiable vehicles.
“The importer of the vehicle, by default, becomes the owner of the vehicle. And so, we proceed to register the vehicle in the name of the importer and then we transfer the title to the prospective buyer and we need consent of the importer to transact that business so that we protect the buyer and then the prospective owner,” he continued.
Stakeholders have voiced concerns about unidentifiable vehicles, prompting the shift from manual to electronic methods of operation to address this issue.
Mr. Addison said as the DVLA Act undergoes legislative review, the authority will ensure that vehicles are registered the very year they are purchased.
This, he notes, will further deal with congestion.
