A 47-year-old driver who had sex with his 13-year-old stepdaughter in Tetegu, Accra, was sentenced to 15 years in jail by the Gender-Based Court at the Police Headquarters.
Joseph Yankson, the driver, is accused of defiling the 13-year-old twice while her mother was absent.
He repeated the assault after offering the victim’s relatives a sheep.
Yankson was charged with defilement and pled guilty.
Dora Eshun Inkumasah presided over the court, which convicted Yankson based on his plea agreement.
Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyie, who handled Chief Inspector Simon Tekpor’s brief, explained that the complainant was a teacher and a friend of the victim’s mother.

According to the prosecution, the accused, who is now a convicted felon, was the victim’s stepfather.
The prosecution claims that the victim, her mother, siblings, and the accused person lived together in a house at Tetegu, near Weija in Accra.
According to the prosecution, in 2023, the victim’s mother traveled to Ajumako in the Central Region to visit family and left the children in the supervision of the accused.
The Court heard that the accused individual took advantage of his wife’s absence and had sexual relations with the victim.
According to the prosecution, the victim alerted her mother when she returned.
According to the report, the victim’s mother invited the accused to appear before certain family heads, and while they deliberated, Yankson acknowledged the crime and promised to placate the victim’s family with a sheep.
On December 26, 2023, in the evening, Yankson had another sexual encounter with the victim.
According to the prosecution, the victim told the complainant about her ordeal, and on January 4, 2024, a complaint was filed with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, Weija Divisional Police Command, and a medical form was issued to the complainant to transport the victim to the hospital for examination and treatment.
