Drama Unfolds on Premier League’s Final Match Day
The 2024/25 Premier League season wrapped up in the most dramatic way possible. On the final day, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle all secured Champions League spots, while Aston Villa were left frustrated and empty-handed after a controversial loss to Manchester United. Villa’s 2-0 defeat meant they missed out on a top-four finish and will instead play in the Europa League next season.

Controversy at Old Trafford
Aston Villa’s hopes were dashed at Old Trafford where things went south after their goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, was sent off late in the first half. Even with 10 men, Villa pushed hard and thought they had taken the lead in the 73rd minute when Morgan Rogers stole the ball from United keeper Altay Bayindir and slotted it home. But the referee had already blown for a foul, and since the whistle came before the ball crossed the line, VAR couldn’t step in—even though replays showed the challenge looked fair. Just minutes later, Amad Diallo scored with a header from a Bruno Fernandes cross, and Christian Eriksen sealed the deal with a penalty. Despite their midweek Europa League final loss, United ended a poor season on a high note, finishing 15th.
Newcastle, City, and Chelsea Grab Top Spots
With Villa losing, Newcastle held onto fifth place, even though they were beaten 1-0 at home by Everton thanks to a second-half header from Charly Alcaraz. Manchester City breezed past Fulham with a 2-0 victory—Ilkay Gundogan netting an impressive acrobatic opener and later winning a penalty that Erling Haaland converted.
Chelsea also got the job done with a tight 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, courtesy of Levi Colwill’s tap-in. That result pushed Chelsea into fourth place and knocked Forest down to seventh, putting them in next season’s Conference League instead.
Mixed Fortunes Elsewhere
Chelsea’s win also hurt Brighton, who had stunned Spurs 4-1 with two goals from Jack Hinshelwood and late strikes by Matt O’Riley and Diego Gomez. Unfortunately, eighth place isn’t enough to qualify for Europe anymore due to Chelsea’s top-five finish—though Chelsea still have the Conference League final against Real Betis coming up.
Liverpool, already crowned champions, ended with a 1-1 draw against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace. Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring for Palace, but Mohamed Salah rescued a point with a late goal after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for denying a clear chance.
Arsenal, West Ham, and Bournemouth Sign Off with Wins
Arsenal grabbed a late 2-1 win over Southampton thanks to Martin Odegaard’s 89th-minute goal. Kieran Tierney scored early in his final appearance for Arsenal, with Ross Stewart equalizing before the late drama.
West Ham beat Ipswich 3-1, with goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus helping them cruise to victory. Bournemouth took down relegated Leicester 2-0 behind two second-half goals from Antoine Semenyo. And finally, Wolves and Brentford shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, with Marshall Munetsi scoring a 75th-minute equalizer for the home side.
