The President’s order to the Auditor General, Daniel Yao Domelevo, to resign is illegal, according to the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations Against Corruption.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo retired Mr. Domelevo on March 3 after he returned from his 167-day cumulative forced leave.
Dr. Kojo Asante, Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development CDD-Ghana, told the media that this is a violation of Article 23 of the Ghanaian constitution.
“The concerns about Mr. Domelevo’s date of birth that served as the basis for the President’s letter were not handled in compliance with Article 23 of the Constitution. Mr. Domelevo has been wrongly punished, as shown by the conduct of the President’s office and the Audit Service.”
The Audit Service Board challenged Mr. Domelevo’s nationality and age on March 2, a day before he was expected to return from his controversial forced leave.
Mr. Domelevo, who is Togolese, should have retired in 2020, according to the Board.
The Audit Service Board based its statements on reports issued by the Auditor General from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
It is reported that he was born on June 1, 1960, rather than June 1, 1961.
In subsequent correspondence, Mr. Domelevo, on the other hand, denied these arguments.
The Presidency approved the Audit Service Board’s retirement statements and confirmed that Mr. Domelevo had retired.
In response to questions about Domelevo’s date of birth, the presidency wrote, “The President is of the opinion that you [Domelevo] have formally left office.”
The Presidency thanked him for his service in a letter and stated that a permanent replacement would be announced shortly.
