The Daniel Ntow Obese (DNO) Foundation has climaxed a two-day career development outreach to some basic schools in Cape Coast to help learners and prospective senior high school students identify and develop their potential.
The outreach began on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Ankaful M/A Basic School and continued at the St. Paul Catholic School at Nkanfoa on June 5, 2024.
Established in memory of the Late Mr. Daniel Ntow Obese, a former central and western regional Hydrologist consultant, the Daniel Ntow Obese Foundation is an NGO aimed at helping the youth, providing outreach and health screening, and scholarships among others.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS at the sidelines of the outreach, the Vice President of the foundation and vice Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, UCC, Dr. Ernest Obese explained that the outreach is part of the core mandate of the foundation.
He said this is to help guide the learners to have ideas of the prospects available to them and identify their unique talents to develop a career out of it.
He noted that the aims and objectives of the foundation are well in line with the government’s TVET programme because the foundation’s objectives are guided by what exists in the education sector.
“We provide them with opportunities in terms of really explaining what technical, vocational education is about, STEM education is about, ICT education is about, and to also guide them when selecting courses, they want to read in the senior high school and eventually what they will be doing in the tertiary institutions,” he explained.
Dr. Ernest Obese added that as part of its mandates, the foundation offers medical support and outreaches to help improve the health of people.
“We also donate clothes, medical supplies, money; we hope that other non-governmental organizations and donors can also support us in achieving these objectives,” he continued.
One of the facilitators and a counsellor at the University of Cape Coast, Professor Linda Forde encouraged the learners to see opportunities in every challenge they face in life adding that challenges are part of life.
She charged the learners to be careful of the choices they make for the future as choices have consequences.
“…wrong choices are also seeds that we sow. With time we see the consequences and the consequences aren’t good when we’ve made wrong choices,” She added.
The Headteacher of the Ankaful M/A Basic School, Mr. Isaac Asante Frimpong and the Assistant Head of the St. Paul Catholic School, Madam Abigail Adams both expressed gratitude to the foundation for offering career guidance to the learners.
They especially admonished parents and teachers to identify the interests of the learners and give them the needed guidance in achieving their dreams.
They also advised parents and teachers to work hand in hand to assist the learners in the selection of schools and courses of study that will align with the learner’s interests to enable them to succeed towards their desired future careers.
Following the support from the NGO, the students who participated expressed appreciation for the knowledge gained saying they are now on the path to success.
They expressed confidence in their abilities and the bright future ahead of them.
