As Discord enters its second decade and prepares for a public offering, it has transformed how online communities interact, evolving from forums and message boards into multi-channel messaging servers. Today, everything from AI platforms like Midjourney to gaming communities and school clubs thrives on Discord.
However, traditional message boards still hold value, as they facilitate organized and incremental discussions, unlike the fast-paced, casual chats on Discord that can overwhelm users with unread messages and obscure essential information.

Peter Sellis, Discord’s SVP of product, stated that the company is exploring ways to enhance structured knowledge sharing, akin to forums. He noted the need for features that better support organized discussions.
One proposed solution involves using large language models (LLMs) to summarize lengthy conversations. However, the diverse user culture on Discord means that the introduction of AI could provoke mixed reactions among users.
Sellis mentioned that LLMs could distill lengthy discussions into more shareable content, but he acknowledged that a satisfactory solution has yet to be found.
With a new CEO and an upcoming IPO, Discord is likely to undergo significant updates in the near future.
