Many people were confused about taking Alexander-Arnold off, especially since Liverpool was trying to win. Tim Sherwood, a former Premier League champ, questioned the decision on Matchday Live on Optus Sport:
I don’t think Arne Slot’s made many wrong calls, but taking off Trent was one. If I’m Unai Emery, I’d be saying ‘thank you!’ He’s a threat every time, and you saw that with his assist for the goal!
Things got worse when Bradley got hurt before the end of the game, which could hurt Liverpool’s depth. With Joe Gomez already out for the season, Sherwood felt keeping Alexander-Arnold on the pitch was smarter.
Connor comes on, gets injured, so now Trent has to play anyway. If you think you have a better chance of winning with him, let him finish the game.
Fitness Concerns?
On the other hand, former Liverpool player Danny Murphy had a different take. He was surprised by the switch but thought fitness might have played a role. Alexander-Arnold just came back from an injury, and Slot might have been trying to manage his time.
I don’t think he took him off because he was playing badly. He just came back from injury a couple of weeks ago. Maybe that was why, or perhaps Slot wanted to shore up the defense, Murphy said.
Even with that reasoning, Murphy felt it was a gamble to take Alexander-Arnold out given how well he was playing.

With Liverpool still in the title chase, every point matters. The draw against Aston Villa kept them in the race, but if they drop points in the future, this decision might get more scrutiny.
