Ghana has long lived and enjoyed the praises of many across the length and breath of the globe with its Gate Way to Africa mantra coupled with her hospitality nature. By this quote, many love to visit the country perhaps for leisure or recreation among other reasons.
Records from the Ghana Tourism Authority has it that a good number of tourist numbering 1,017,576.00 came through the Kotoka International Airport last year 2023 reflecting a percentage of 88.64. This is a good measure considering the fact that we are competing with other African countries with better amenities than Ghana. We have done well with the YEAR OF RETURN INITIATIVE as from the year 2019 till date but it appears we are only focused on that much more than Domestic Tourism.
We can not leverage on the Year of Return alone and leave the very people, sites and enablers that make up the Eco system in Ghana’s tourism. It appears many do not have interest in domestic tourism. We can only succeed holistically by shifting attention to that side as well. The question remains why, how and when?

We’ll explore strategies to boost domestic tourism here in Cape Coast. We’ll discuss the potential and unique offerings of this historic city and share ideas on how we can encourage more Ghanaians to experience the beauty of their own country.Domestic tourism is vital for any country’s development. It strengthens local economies, promotes cultural heritage, and fosters pride among citizens. For Ghana, promoting domestic tourism means creating jobs, supporting local artisans, and preserving our rich history.
Carbo Coso as known in the past by the very settlers in the then Gold Coast is home to a number of tourists attractions that could be major draws for domestic tourists. From the historical Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to vibrant local markets, posubans, the Emintsimadze Palace, the famous London Bridge and Kotokuraba market and traditional festivals, the city has something for everyone.”
Additionally, the natural beauty of Cape Coast, with its stunning beaches and lush forests, further enhances its tourist appeal. Having established this premise, lets now delve into the discussion proper as to know the locals don’t show interest in embarking on such journeys.
Per my engagement with many, one thing that comes clear among all the communication are, we do not know where the tourists sites are, one guy intimated
Another lady also says, some or most tourists sites need renovations and promotions. We hardly see sign directional sign posts in our communities. To boost the local economy and fictionalize the interest of the locals there are quite a number of things that has to be done.
Marketing Campaigns should be encouraged. The government must a matter of urgency to Invest directly into these sites to make it more accessible to the locals. A typical of such are the Posubans and heritage sites.
Again massive collaboration with local Travel Agents should also be done parri passu order to create tailored packages which are more economic friendly for the locals to participate anytime
Sankofa they say isn’t a taboo. Its about time we go organize more cultural events and festivals that celebrate local heritage, drawing in both local and regional visitors. The Oguaa Fetu afahye is one that stands out among the people of Ghana. Widely celebrated by all but a festival for the fantes in Central region. Ghana Tourism Authority should partner our traditional leaders in planning seamless events that will attract many more ghanaians from all over Ghana for cross cultural assimilation.
Maintenance of our roads networks, smooth transportation to and fro, and eco friendly accommodation are very essential to the growth.
Periodically organizing workshops and refresher courses for the local tour guides is also another way of encouraging them to do better. Tourism is all about the experiences, so by training they in tend give locals authentic experiences and knowledge about the history and culture of the area.
Domestic Tourism in Ghana is very crucial and has to be welcomed by all both the formal and informal sectors. Cape Coast in particular has a lot to offer and that requires a collective effort. The government, local businesses, the locals should come together in making this work.
Nothing happens in vacuum, we can only bring this to light if we put in the work. When this is done properly, many locals in the said communities where the tourist sites are located will give massive employment to the youth and the ripple effect will be achieved. Cape Coast not just a tourist destination for visitors from afar but a beloved spot for all Ghanaians. Indeed the town of beautiful nonsense.
