The Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Ernest Arthur has bemoaned the actions of some individuals who to him are causing a disadvantage to the environment within the metropolis.
Particularly on flooding, the metropolis has in the past weeks experienced an increased intensity of flooding situations posing danger to human lives and properties.
Recently, more than 700 houses in Simiw, Nkontrodo, Ntranoa, Abina, Atonkwa, and Ankaful in the Elmina Municipality and Amamoma and Kwaprow in the Cape Coast Metropolis were flooded when the Kakum and Surowi rivers overflowed their banks after a heavy downpour.
While sympathizing with the people affected by the situation in his metropolis, Mr. Ernest Arthur says the flooding could have been averted if there were proper drainage systems and residents were not building in waterways.
Recognizing the challenges and effects the rains have had on the areas he cautioned residents to desist from building on waterways.
He explains that residents do not take the appropriate steps before building on a piece of land and later complain when the buildings are torn down.
Speaking exclusively to ATLFM NEWS he indicated that “when you are building it is an investment for you and for your future generation and so whatever you put in there, ask yourself questions; is it worth it, is it safe?”
“Normally, it’s in the night that someone will wake up, and before you realize the structure is there. They don’t go through the due process.”
Mr. Arthur, therefore, urged residents to always come to the Metro office for a thorough inspection of their lands before building on them.
He emphasized saying “I have leaved here almost all my life and have never witnessed such flooding in Cape Coast. And so those of us who are busily building in waterways please let desist from that and go through the process… And so you have the land yes it belongs to you but when you want to develop it, come to the assembly so that we will all be safe in the future.”
