The ancient kingdom of Denkyira has witnessed a historic moment with the enstoolment of its 26th ruler, Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsɛm IV, known in private life as Mr. Oscar Kese.
The colourful coronation took place on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Jukwa, the traditional capital of Denkyira, in the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District of the Central Region.
The event, which drew hundreds of traditional rulers, religious leaders, political dignitaries, security officials, and citizens from across Ghana, marked the first installation of a Denkyirahene in nearly 70 years.

The ceremony followed the passing of the late King, Odeɛfo Boa Amponsem III, in 2015, and years of cultural and spiritual preparation that began with the Dotie Yie rites performed in 2022.
Among the distinguished personalities who graced the historic ceremony were Nana Ama Ayensua Saara III, Denkyirahemaa; the Akyem Kotokuhene, Dr. Nana Yaw Frimpong, alongside a host of other traditional leaders and invited guests.
The occasion was described as both majestic and deeply spiritual, rekindling pride in Denkyira’s rich heritage and reaffirming its central place in Ghana’s traditional hierarchy.
As part of the sacred rites, Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsɛm IV wielded the revered Denkyira State Sword, known as Tiahiabua — a 435-year-old ancestral relic first consecrated in 1590.
The sword, one of the most sacred symbols of royal authority in Akan history, represents the enduring lineage of Denkyira kingship, dating back to Denkyirahene Werempe Ampem in 1624. Since then, every Denkyirahene has sworn the oath of office upon this ancient sword, pledging loyalty to the ancestors, fidelity to the kingdom, and commitment to its unity.
In his maiden royal address, Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsɛm IV expressed profound gratitude to the Council of Elders and the Denkyira Traditional Council for their confidence in him.
He pledged to uphold the values of peace, justice, and development, promising to work tirelessly to strengthen Denkyira’s unity and cultural identity. “This is not just the beginning of a reign, but the continuation of a sacred legacy entrusted to us by our forebears,” he said.
The enstoolment of Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsɛm IV, who hails from the Agona Royal Family of Denkyira, symbolizes a new dawn for one of Ghana’s most historic kingdoms — a continuity of a royal line that has endured for centuries.
Throughout history, Denkyira has been ruled by many illustrious monarchs, including Werempe Ampem (1624–1637), Boa Amponsem I (1637–1695), Ntim Gyakari (1695–1701), and Odeɛfo Boa Amponsem III (1955–2016), whose legacies remain deeply woven into the cultural fabric of the Akan world.
The coronation of Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsɛm IV thus not only celebrates the rebirth of Denkyira’s royal institution but also reaffirms its enduring role as a beacon of Akan civilization — a throne rooted in sovereignty, tradition, and timeless wisdom.
