Members of the supposedly disbanded vigilante group, Delta Force, are working as National Security operatives, according to the embattled Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ayensu Opare Addo (rtd).
Prior to the 2020 general elections, the pro-NPP vigilante group was said to have disbanded after the Vigilantism and Other Related Offences Act went into effect.
However, DCOP Ayensu Opare Addo (rtd), who was brutalized by National Security operatives, told Citi News that he personally identified two of the operatives who arrested him as members of the allegedly disbanded group.
This information confirms suspicions that members of some vigilante groups were absorbed into National Security following their alleged disbandment.
“The Delta Force had been disbanded, so I knew they wouldn’t do anything else. Because I knew the Delta Force and knew they were not loyal to the government of the day, I disbanded the vigilante group. However, they are now referring to themselves as National Security operatives,” he told Eyewitness News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu.
DCOP Ayensu Opare Addo (rtd) also talked about his ordeal with the operatives. He questioned his attackers’ justification for their treatment of him.
“I was the one who was assaulted,” says the narrator. They bound me with handcuffs and fired an AK-47 at me. DCOP Ayensu Opare Addo added, “I don’t understand why a reasonable and sensible senior operative of the National Security would order junior officers to come and attack me when they could call me and handle this matter reasonably.”
Last Tuesday, a group of people suspected of being members of the defunct pro-NPP vigilante group, Delta Force were detained for allegedly attempting to forcibly remove the Regional Security Coordinator from his office.
Under the guise of being security officials, the group stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council.
They insisted on removing DCOP Ayensu Opare Addo (rtd), the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, from his office.
This caused a bit of a stir around the office.
The said members of the group were then arrested by police officers from the Ashanti Regional Police Command, led by the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP David Agyemang Adjem.
The people who were arrested were later granted bail, according to a police source.
It’s not the first time something like this has happened. In 2017, just as the Nana Addo government was taking office, a group of Delta Force members attempted to depose the then-Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator.
Following the arrest and sentencing of the hooligans, some Delta Force members boldly besieged the courthouse in an attempt to free their colleagues.
Despite the gravity of the incident, those who stormed the courtroom received only fines and warnings.
