David Dontoh, a veteran Ghanaian actor, has shared his thoughts on some of the issues plaguing the Ghanaian film industry.
When asked about the recent quality of production in Ghanaian films, David told Nana Tuffour Boateng and Frema Adunyame on Citi TV’s “Upside Down” show that the lack of good writers is one of the factors holding the country back in terms of film and theatre production.
“First and foremost, everything begins with the script. The script is the basis of every film or drama you make for stage or television. We’ll have to start over to pique people’s interest in writing stories. Since Nigeria has such a strong writing community, and theatre is such a powerful means of entertainment and knowledge in Nigeria, Nollywood has actually surpassed Ghana.
David is the Chairman of the National Film Authority and has vast experience in scriptwriting, stage acting, and other fields.
So far, the authority has placed in place some strategies to assist in the viability of Ghana’s film industry.
It has also established a Classification Committee, which has been charged with classifying and censoring audio-visual content for public consumption, following its inauguration by President Nana Akfuo-Addo in December 2019.
It has a Local Content Committee under its aegis, which is in charge of ensuring that television content is largely tailored to project the values of Ghana’s culture and heritage.
The National Film Authority recently established a Brand Name Committee to assist in naming the Ghanaian film industry.
Obtaining this name is thought to be the first step toward reviving and marketing the film industry to the rest of the world.
David Dontoh is known for his excellent performances in films such as “Sika Sunsum,” “Beasts of No Nation,” “Somewhere in Africa,” “Ties That Bind,” “Deadly Voyage,” “Kukurantumi- Path to Accra,” “No Time to Die,” and “The Cursed One.”
