Ahead of the Launch of the University of Cape Coast’s Design Thinking and Innovation Hub (D-HUB), a training session has been organized for members with the aim of equipping them with skills that will help them develop innovative solutions to societal problems.
This is the first of four training sessions that will take place over the course of four weeks.
The D- HUB is an initiative under the office of the Vice-Chancellor with a mission to develop change agents, stimulate the establishment and growth of startup firms and other businesses, and help solve societal problems through design thinking, technology transfer, diffusion of innovation, and continuous improvement.
Speaking on the sidelines of the training, Director of D- HUB, Dr. Keren Naa Abakah Arthur indicated that by the end of the training, participants would have acquired skills that they will use to generate creative problem-solving solutions that are important to their community.
She adds that these innovative ideas will be exhibited when the Hub is officially launched in April so that people get to know what the hub is doing and become more involved.
She stressed that the Centre’s purpose is to tackle social issues, therefore the hub will serve as a platform to train participants such as students, staff, and faculty so they are able to generate creative problem-solving solutions.
She, however, added that the hub will be extended to the general public in the future.
“Ideas are more innovative and richer when it is based on a collaborative effort and so I am hoping that people learn to open up and accept the views of other people to make the discussion richer,” she said.
Dr. Abakah Arthur further emphasized that after all the training sessions, the hub will provide an enabling space for members to access the facility and its materials in order to develop more creative initiatives.
The first training session saw participants who include students, staff, and faculty being taken through the design thinking process, a methodology that focuses on the real needs of people as well as helping people to come up with ideas, test the ideas and develop prototypes.
