According to the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), there has been a notable increase in the number of incidents of online blackmail.
In the first half of 2024, 226 victims lost GH₵112,209, and 141 more reports were submitted between March and June.
Threat actors in these cases use social media to establish connections, entice victims into close relationships, secretly record nude video calls, and then utilize the footage as leverage for extortion.
In a statement, the CSA recommended using strong passwords to safeguard private information and refraining from accepting friend requests from strangers.

“Following the March 2024 alert, in which the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) noted a 254% year-on-year increase in online blackmail cases for the first two months of the year, an additional one hundred and forty-one (141) reports were filed between March and June.
“The two hundred and twenty-six (226) cases recorded so far this year have resulted in a loss of GH¢ 112,209.”
