The Central Regional Distribution Manager for the Ghana Water Company Limited, Thomas Amenya has hinted that customers owing the company more than GH₵ 1,000 will soon be prosecuted.
According to him, the process to ensure this has already begun, with private individuals and various government institutions already notified of the debts they owe.
He explained that “assuming somebody is owing say 5,000 cedis is still consuming the water; he comes to pay maybe only 200 cedis and by so doing every month we send the customer a bill, it keeps on piling up. So now we’ve started from customers who are owing 1,000 cedis and above. We’ve started the process in Cape Coast South. Very soon maybe we will call upon you to come and cover when we get to the court.”
Mr. Amenya indicated that the Ghana Water Company will be compelled to disconnect definitely water supply of the health facilities, second and third cycle institutions, and various ministry departments and agencies should they ignore the call to pay their arrears to the company.
“We will be compelled to disconnect definitely because we need this money to pay our electricity bills.” He emphasized on the Atlantic Wave Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Central and Western Regional Communication Manager of the Ghana Water Company, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie is cautioning individuals against approaching unauthorized persons to apply for water connections to their various structures.
According to him, it has become very common for most people to approach individuals and other staff members of the company who are unauthorized to make such connections.
This, he indicates disrupts their services and creates a financial loss for the company adding that persons in need of their service should walk to their premises dotted across the country to get proper documentation for subsequent connection to the water grid.
“Don’t use our staff; no matter what the person tells you. Come there personally and if you cannot come there, somebody else can come on your behalf…and whatever amount you pay, demand to be given a receipt.” He cautioned.
Mr. Barnie also debunked claims that the water company delays in their water supply connections stating that their connection process does not exceed 21 days.
He said individuals can get water services connected to their homes within seven or three days after the application processes begin.
He explained that “all one needs to do is to submit to the Ghana Water Company office, a photocopy of a site plan, where a new service application form costing GHC 10.00 will be given to be filled by the client. After, a date will be given to the client to come back to the office to take the new service connection team to the site where the water connection is to be done.”
