Eugene Arhin, the Presidency’s Director of Communications, has said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would shortly make a decision on the ongoing closure of the country’s borders.
Mr. Arhin said that whatever choice the President makes on the issue, he would confer with the COVID-19 National Response Team.
He announced this to the presidential press corps at the Jubilee House on Monday, August 30, 2021.
The constant closing of the borders has proven inconvenient for many, particularly inhabitants of the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region, who recently staged a protest demanding the reopening of the border.
Residents who participate in commercial operations in and outside Togo, as well as on the border with Togo, believe that land borders should be opened to safeguard their livelihoods, just as land and air borders have been.
As a result, they urged the government to open the land borders, which are critical to their commercial operations.
Mr. Eugene Arhin, speaking to the press corps, said President Akufo-Addo recognizes the problems the limitations have imposed on the people who live in such regions, adding that the President would examine whatever aspect of the restrictions is necessary.
“President Akufo-Addo understands the difficulties people have had to go through the restrictions that have been imposed on lives and livelihoods, and I believe if there is the need for them to review whatever aspects of the restrictions, he will make it known when he addresses the nation.”
