Ghana has taken delivery of 600, 000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines distributed by the global vaccine sharing initiative COVAX,
The vaccines which are manufactured by the Serum Institute of India were received on the morning of Wednesday 24th February 2021. Present to receive the vaccines were key government and health officials including the Health Minister designate Kwaku Agyemang Manu and some members of the diplomatic corp.
A statement from UNICEF said “After a year of disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 80,700 Ghanaians getting infected with the virus and over 580 lost lives, the path to recovery for the people of Ghana can finally begin,”

According to the statement, the delivery in Ghana signifies “a momentous occasion”, as as it is “critical in bringing the pandemic to an end. The only way out of this crisis is to ensure that vaccinations are available for all.”
UNICEF expects this arrival to be part of the “largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history.”
The statement further added that “This is an unprecedented global effort to make sure all citizens have access to vaccines.”
The COVAX Facility plans is expected to deliver almost 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines before the year ends.
Government intends to begin the deployment of the vaccines to the segmented health facilities by March 2020.
An earlier statement from the Ministry of Information indicated that the Greater Accra Metro including Awutu Senya and Awutu Senya East in the Central Region will part targeted in the first roll out.
A similar segmented population in the Greater Kumasi Metro and Obuasi municipality will also be covered, according to a statement from the Information Ministry.
