Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, Emmanuel Cherry, has commended the Government of Ghana for honoring its promise to settle outstanding debts owed to contractors.
Speaking in an interview with Peace FM, Mr. Cherry said, “We are grateful that the government has begun paying contractors. It’s a positive step that will allow many of our members to return to sites and continue critical road and infrastructure projects.”
He, however, appealed for additional financial support, stressing that more funds are needed to complete all ongoing works.
“We are calling on government to release about GHS120 billion. This amount will go a long way to clear pending works and accelerate development,” he stated.
Mr. Cherry also emphasized the need for timely payments before contracts are awarded, noting that the current practice of delayed funding hampers progress.
“Contracts should be backed with prompt payments. It’s the only way to avoid unnecessary stalling and ensure successful project delivery,” he explained.
While acknowledging the government’s effort so far, he added that contractors are seeking an increase in funds.
“Like Oliver Twist, we are asking for more. Not because we are greedy, but because we play a vital role in national development and contribute significantly to the country’s tax base,” he concluded.
